The Dutch constructed a canal from Puttalam via Negombo to Colombo to transport the cinnamon. Despite being neglected for many years, the fort remains in good condition today. It's interesting to note that the fort was converted into a Sri Lankan Navy base for training and operational activities during the escalation of the Sri Lankan civil war.
