Marriage Requirements in Sri Lanka

  • Minimum residency period before marriage: 4 days

  • Valid UK/Irish passport (must be valid for at least 6 months beyond return date)

  • Birth certificate (short or long form accepted)

  • Affidavit confirming single status (required even if previously married)

Additional Documents if Applicable

  • If divorced: Decree Absolute

  • If widowed: Former marriage certificate and original death certificate

  • If name changed: Deed Poll certificate

  • If divorced and reverted to maiden name: Deed Poll required as proof of name change

  • If adopted: Adoption papers

Before You TravelThe following documents must be certified:

  • For British nationals: By the Foreign & Commonwealth Office

  • For Irish nationals: By the Department of Foreign Affairs in Ireland

  • For other nationals: By the respective foreign ministry

Documents requiring certification (where applicable):

  • Affidavit and Divorce Certificate

  • Death Certificate of late spouse and previous marriage certificate (if widowed)

  • Deed Poll (including for divorcees reverting to a maiden name)
