This temple complex boasts five caves, with over 2000 square meters of painted walls and ceilings, showcasing the incredible artistic talents of the locals who once lived in this small island nation. Due to its immense artistic and archeological values, Dambulla Cave Temple has been listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.

Day 03 - Negombo to Sigiriya

Explore Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya: A Tour of Sri Lanka's Rich Cultural Heritage

Enjoy a delicious breakfast before departing for Polonnaruwa. The drive will take about 1.5 hours.

Take a cycling tour of one of Sri Lanka's best-preserved ruins - the UNESCO World Heritage City of Polonnaruwa. Cycling through the soft surfaces covering approximately 10km, you'll witness the impressive stone culture and well-preserved 12th-century ruins of the medieval capital of Sri Lanka.

Polonnaruwa's ancient heart is an essential royal capital that recalls an inspired past. Despite being nearly a millennium old, it's relatively younger than Anuradhapura and, consequently, in better condition. The monuments are arranged in a compact garden setting and their development is easier to follow.

In the evening, you will head to Sigiriya to explore the 5th-century Rock Fortress. King Kashyapa built the fortress, which is an impressive UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Wonders of the World. Due to its unique shape, the Rock itself has its identity. The irrigation technologies of water gardens and the archeological technologies of the large lion carved at the entrance are precious since they still exist.

The Fortress was named Sigiriya, which means 'Lion Rock' in Sinhalese, due to the lion paws at the entrance. The beautifully designed ramparts and moats built around the rock are a testament to the Fortress's strength and resilience. The colorful frescoes with unique paintings of women and the Mirror wall demonstrate the beauty and majesty of Sigiriya.

Dinner and overnight stay in Sigiriya.
